Annual Shearing Day

               Tuesday, May 22nd

             8:00 am

Every year in the spring our herd has their fleece shorn. The timing of this event is tricky. The animals need to have their winter coats removed before the hot weather arrives, but one never quite knows when the cold weather, especially in the nights, will end. Oh well, should a cold snap come, we just will have to bring them into the main barn for the night.

Our professional shearer, Tom Morrison, will arrive at 8:00 with his assistant. The choice of who will shear is very important for three reasons for us.

*We want someone who will be kind with the animals so they are unnecessarily stressed.

*It's very important that the coat is removed in even, smooth passes without any trimming of where they have already sheared. These second cuts are a big problem. They make fiber processing much more difficult plus they make it more difficult for us to show the fleece in regional and national alpaca fleece competitions.

*Tom is very well organized, takes his time, and helps make the shearing process for the volunteers.

The whole process takes about 2 hours. Come by if you would like to take photos or just watch. If you would like to help us out by volunteering, give us a call so we have an idea of who will make up our team and can assign duties.

Hope to see you soon.
